Welcome to our paradise island Sri Lanka…the Pearl of the Indian Ocean which was known as Taprobane to the Romans, as Serendib to the Arabs Traders and much later the Portuguese called it Ceilao, Dutch as Ceylan and the British as Ceylon. In fact it was known as Lanka to its native Buddhists and even in the Hindu epic Ramayana it was referred as Lanka. In 1972 original Lanka was restored with the addition of “Sri” which means Resplendent in the local Sinhala language. The early Sinhala people originated from North India, arriving in Sri Lanka around the 5th century B.C. and replacing the native Veddahs.
The capital city, Sri Jayawardenepura, Kotte, is a suburb of Colombo. Colombo is the largest city and the commercial, industrial and cultural capital of Sri Lanka. It is located on the west coast of the island. Colombo is a busy and vibrant place with a mixture of modern life and colonial buildings with a population of about 800 thousands. Due to its large harbour and its strategic position along the East-West sea trade routes, Colombo was known to ancient traders 2,000 years ago.
Sri Lanka and its amazing diversity of scenery, ancient cities, hill country and tea plantations, wildlife sanctuaries, waterfalls and sun bronzed beaches will no doubt mesmerize any visitor.
The ever smiling friendly people of Sri Lanka are waiting to welcome you…..
